Members of the Dyersburg community toured Dyersburg High School this Tuesday to hear and see about DHS’s CTE programs. The tour started with the guests stopping at our student-run cafe, The Muffin Top, in the cafeteria. From there, they visited the business section of the school, which includes Marketing, Teaching as a Profession, and Accounting.
The next program they visited was Criminal Justice. This program allows students to gain first-hand experiences from knowing what to do in certain situations, learning how to problem solve, and getting a feel for what their future may be.
The fourth program they visited was the E-sports room. E-sports has just recently developed in the last year at DHS. This program allows students of all types to be involved. The club competes in different games like Madden 25, Rocket League, and Fortnite. Recently, the team has had duos placed number 2 and number 3 in Tennessee.
Next, the group was taken to the Trojan Torch room. Trojan Torch is a class of students who run an online and a print issue. This class allows students to be creative with their writing as well as express their opinions about student life.
After that, they visited Coach Tom Mathis, who teaches JAG, Jobs for America's Graduates. JAG lets senior students learn all about what the real world has in store for them. Examples are applying for college scholarships, learning the basics of an interview, and simply writing thank-you notes.
Afterward, the group headed to the STEM lab. The STEM program is very important to DHS. It lets students discover different parts of the mind, and things they use in geometry class are brought to STEM. The Rough Country program ties into the STEM lab. Coming off the Rough Country program, the group went to the Welding department. The Welding program allows students to be skilled in welding and job-ready when graduating from DHS.
As another option, Agriculture/ Vet Science is also offered. The group got to see the students in action washing two dogs from the local shelter.
The Nursing program is also a great opportunity for students at DHS. Just like welding, when the students graduate, they can leave with a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate.
The last program the group visited was Audio Visual Productions. This class offers students a chance to learn skills in photography, video editing, and production. This class works closely with the Rough Country program as well. The community has such a positive impact on DHS as a whole, and we are so thankful for the community members who came!
