A New Way to Faith: Manna

Many people are familiar with the language-learning app, Duolingo. The app works by encouraging users to continue a daily streak, which is achieved by completing lessons. For many prospective language learners, this format has been effective in holding them accountable for continuing to learn and master the language. A new app following this format has gained popularity recently, but it helps users to become familiar with something much different than a language.

   This app is called Manna. The app walks users through the Bible and encourages growth in their relationship with God. Upon downloading and launching the app, users will be prompted to answer a couple of questions to gauge their preexisting knowledge of the Bible. Manna’s programming uses the answers to these questions, along with a short quiz about general Bible knowledge, to determine which lessons to provide the user with.

   Once past the initial questionnaire, users will be free to switch between guided lessons as they please. The lessons are structured around approximately two chapters from a particular book of the Bible. Manna breaks down each chapter into easily digestible summaries of the events, though it is recommended that users utilize the Bible feature in the app to read the scripture themselves. Users must complete mastery checks to move on to the next section of the lesson. Once finished with the chapter overviews, users will gain access to a screen that analyzes the implications of the scripture and how it reflects God’s character. This part of the lesson is helpful for users who are working on building or developing a personal relationship with the Lord. The lessons are concluded with a guided prayer that is based on the scripture in the particular lesson. Manna encourages users to complete lessons each day by giving users who do so a streak and “manna” that can be spent in the app to customize their characters. 

   Manna has the potential to be a helpful tool for many people wanting to build their knowledge of both scripture and the Lord. Its easy-to-understand lessons and encouragement tactics for users create a prime atmosphere for users to successfully engage with the Word and build their relationships with God.
