At the end of the school year, students are trying to find ways to keep their energy up and finish strong. Many students and teenagers turn to various brands of energy drinks to achieve this. Some of the most popular of these brands are Alani Nu, Celsius and Bloom. However, some concerns have been raised about the impact consumption of these drinks can have on teenagers’ health.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, adolescents (ages 12-18) should not consume more than 100 milligrams of caffeine each day. Alani Nu and Celsius energy drinks have double this number, at 200 milligrams of caffeine per can. Bloom energy drinks have 180 milligrams of caffeine per can. This excessive consumption of caffeine can have detrimental effects on the health of growing teenagers. Excessive caffeine can lead to increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, trouble sleeping, anxiety, digestive issues and dehydration.
Many energy drink brands rely on chemicals, additives and other artificial ingredients to achieve their flavors and caffeine content. However, Bloom has focused on using natural ingredients (like green tea and apple cider vinegar) to achieve their flavors and caffeine levels. While Bloom energy drinks still cause adolescents to exceed the recommended caffeine intake, it is still a better, more health-conscious choice than other energy drink brands. Of course, due to the potential health risks associated with excessive caffeine consumption, other methods of boosting energy are advised.
There are some ways to keep energy levels up without relying on energy drinks and overloading on caffeine. Regular exercise, a consistent sleep schedule, a diet of nutrient-dense foods and proper hydration can all help boost energy levels without introducing chemicals, artificial ingredients and excessive caffeine to the body. In addition to these methods, it is always okay to take a break. Take a walk, spend some time in the sun or take a short catnap to bounce back more energized and finish the school year strong!
