Before the 2025-2026 school year, Dyerburg High School made a few alterations to the dress code policy for students. Previously, students had to wear a collared shirt that could be black, gold, white or gray.
According to the DHS Student Handbook from the 2024-2025 school year, “[Shirts] should be one color (black, white, gold, gray), collared (polo, button-up dress shirt), with appropriate buttons to the top of the garment. Only top button can be unbuttoned. Long or short sleeves are acceptable, and should not display anything other than a school-approved emblem or a small brand logo. No wording. No see through blouses may be worn.”
At the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, a new section was added to the handbook: “SPIRIT WEAR SHIRTS- EVERY DAY IS SPIRIT DAY IN DYERSBURG CITY SCHOOLS,” which allows students to wear a t-shirt or pullover without a collar as long as it shows school spirit and includes school colors.
"At first, I was initially surprised because this school is strict on dress code,” junior Logan Frazier said.
DHS has had a consistent dress code for over a decade, so many students were surprised by the seemingly sudden change in the dress code.
According to Kamela Rogers, DHS’s principal and messenger between the advisory groups, the main motivation for creating a new clause in the school dress code is to increase school spirit by promoting sports and extracurricular activities. She hopes to make students more comfortable in class.
“I was also happy when I saw the change, since they gave us a lot of school shirts, and we were only allowed to wear them on Friday; it only makes sense for them to be allowed every day,” senior La’Trell Glass said.
Seela Newbill, the curriculum coordinator, interjected that the parent and student advisory groups brought up the fact that spirit shirts were being sold despite students only being allowed to wear them on Fridays. Rogers believes that this change in the school dress code is already meeting their expectations of these goals. Dyersburg High School is more than excited to allow students to show their Trojan pride every day in comfort!
