The USC Speak Your MIND Ice Bucket Challenge has swept through Dyersburg High School’s student body. It was first started by the University of South Carolina’s Mental Illness Needs Discussion (MIND) Club on March 31, 2025. This ice bucket challenge is a revival of the 2014 ice bucket challenge that worked to raise awareness and donations for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is a neurodegenerative disease that damages nerve cells and leads to a lack of muscle control.
The challenge spreads through a nomination system. People nominate their friends, family, teammates, and coaches when they post their videos. Once people receive their nominations, they have 24 hours to pour a bucket of ice water over their heads and post their videos. By posting videos, people are drawing attention to mental health awareness and encouraging donations to the cause.
The USC Speak Your MIND Ice Bucket Challenge has been a huge success. According to USA Today, as of April 23, almost $300,000 has been raised for mental health awareness.
