On Monday, August 18, the Lady Trojans’ volleyball team played the University School of Jackson in the Terry Glover Gymnasium. Both the junior varsity and varsity teams secured wins in the first games of the season.
Junior Varsity ended the first set with a win. Going into the second set, the girls maintained their momentum. Sophomore Micah Tosh was consistent with her serves, getting two aces in a row. Freshman Sadie Frye went on to get a kill, putting the score at 22-12. Frye proceeded to get two aces, even with the timeout that USJ took between her serves. During the match point, USJ made some errors, leading to the victory of the JV team.
After the JV win, the Lady Trojans’ Varsity team came out with a lot of energy on the court in all three sets, refusing to let up any momentum. The Lady Trojans were consistent with their serves, with Avery Hinson leading with 5 aces for the game. Bella Turnage took the lead with 4 kills for the varsity team, and even had a “Happy Birthday kill.” Taniyah Brooks followed Turnage with 3 kills on the court.
USJ tried to fight back, but libero Avery Gatlin and our defensive specialists Kate Meadows and Izzie Odom covered the deep and sharp areas of the court. Murphy Mae Morgan also played a significant role on defense, with 5 blocks for the game.
The Lady Trojans Varsity Volleyball team won all 3 sets with confidence. “The first game of the season went really well, and all the girls stayed up the whole time, and if we got down, we didn’t let it affect us,” Turnage said. The Lady Trojans Volleyball team has a long and exciting season awaiting them, and they are starting it out in the right way. Come out and support the Lady Trojans against South Gibson on Thursday, August 21!
