Myint wins national award

Leah Myint, 8th grade winner in Tennessee and in the Deep South Region for her poem "Plant America for the Next 100 Years," has just been notified by National Garden Clubs, Inc., that she has also won Honorable Mention nationally for her poem. It will be published in a free digital poetry booklet.

Dyersburg Garden Club sponsors the contest at Dyersburg High School under the leadership of Plus 1 teacher Melissa Baker.

Now a freshman at Dyersburg High School, Leah was presented a certificate from National Garden Clubs, Inc., and a gift from Dyersburg Garden Club.

Watch My Country Grow 

Watch its leaves gleam and glow

Watch its trees say hello

Watch its rivers ebb and flow

In 100 years

Will there be a sight to see?

Will there be a garden?

Will there be a tree?

If a bee can make its honey

If the sky can be so sunny

Then why turn our trees to money?

This whole matter isn’t funny

Our country can’t be filled with trash

We need to stop being rash

No more forest turned to ash

No more wood turned to cash

Plant a seed while you can

Protect it from your fellow man

So in a century from now

Our nature stays the same somehow

All around my country 

plants will grow and sing

for 100 years to come

what a beautiful thing
