Springtime is the inbetween season bringing heat and wind. It provides an array of things, including pollen and allergies. Even locally, seasonal allergies and even strains of coronavirus and the stomach bug are resurfacing. With this comes a sneezing and snotting epidemic that can dampen the springtime and bring a lasting sour mood. Why do allergies happen and what can you do about it?

At the root of these allergies is springtime pollen. It is important to realize that allergies have been getting worse because of warmer temperatures causing trees to produce more amounts of pollen, more intense allergenic pollen and earlier release of pollen (AAFA, 2026).

Symptoms for allergies vary for everyone. Unvarying is that allergies can ruin your day and make it hard to get through the week without running out of tissues. Dealing with this can create newfound stress and lack of sleep.

“It makes me super tired and just overall makes me feel pretty bad. I just don't feel like doing anything whenever my allergies start acting up. Usually, if I take medicine, it helps, but it takes about 30 minutes,” junior Gage Tate said.

Having Zyrtec, Claritin and a good vitamin c intake through daily vitamins can be crucial for surviving this added challenge. But even more important is cleaning your environment and staying away from dusty or pollinated areas when possible. Having disinfectant and tissues in large supply in backpacks and classrooms is essential for maintaining such environments.

“When pollen is really high just stay inside. It’s safer that way,” junior Emily Grissom said.

Knowing that you are not alone, allergies are still uncomfortable but manageable in your everyday life. Staying positive and keeping clean are the best ways to combat allergies.

“Allergies can be rough to deal with, especially during the spring and summer, but just don't let it stop you from doing what you want to. I try to never miss anything due to allergies and things like that, if I don't have to,” Tate said.

Allergies suck but through safe practices and determination you can power through and continue this springtime cheer well into Summer.
