Rumours by Fleetwood Mac has made itself one of the most iconic albums in music history from the drama and chaos it was formed from to the overall sound and soul attached to the album. The songs that make up the album itself have found themselves keeping their relevance throughout the years with some of the most well-known tracks being “The Chain” and “Dreams” to name just a few.
The creation of the album itself was messy with jealousy and friction between members causing a distressing environment with member Christine McVie saying that “Everybody was pretty weirded out,” regarding the entire production of the Rumours album.
The work on the album itself began in 1976 after a successful tour and popular singles like “Rhiannon” and “Over My Head” the pressure to deliver was there along with the building up of drama within the group–only adding to the stress regarding the album.
Within the album, each song tells a different story about the people within the band with “The Chain” bringing them all together in one ballad.
While the album was a huge success, many members of the group still could not find it in them to feel them to actually enjoy the success of the album with the member Lindsey Buckingham saying: “When Rumours went crazy, I just couldn’t bring myself to feel strongly about the album. At some point, all the stuff surrounding it started to become the main focus. There was a gap between what I felt was important internally—what I had accomplished musically–and the popular acclaim,” in an interview with Rolling Stone in 1984.
Disregarding all of the drama that came with the entire creation of the album, it has proven itself to be a musical masterpiece. The tracks within the album mixes the genres of folk, pop and rock—creating a smooth, timeless track that almost anyone could enjoy.
If you want an album that has deep, emotional meaning and a whole “scandal” behind it, Rumours has proven itself to be just the thing.
