Dyersburg High School’s drama club put on the production Whistle Stop by Tracy Wells on November 6, 7, 9, and 10. This production was lighthearted and cheerful, leaving the audience in high spirits.
This comedy and drama production follows the story of a small town diner located near the Gold Star Cafe, a diner that is in the town of Fairview, a bigger town that presidential candidates love to visit. This is because of President Eisenhower's 1952 campaign stop. On this particular day, a big snowstorm has come through, freezing the pipes of the Gold Star, leaving the Whistle Stop with a much bigger issue: the candidate’s visit.
The locals of the small town rush to get the small diner prepared for the unexpected campaign visit. However, as it gets closer to the candidate’s visit, stress builds up and threatens to break apart the friendships in this small town.
The author, Tracy Wells, depicts the meaning of friendship and community through the candidate's visit.
“I think with Whistle Stop being a play about a small town, Dyersburg can easily relate. With current moves to modernize Dyersburg, we must remember what binds us all together: community. Whistle Stop shows how, even through attempts to divide a town, they stick together, and I think that is a valuable lesson for our town as well,” senior Shelby Gullett said.
The DHS drama club helps to convey that image to the community of Dyersburg.
DHS drama is thankful for the amount of support this production has had and is prepared for the upcoming spring production.
